The very early Verge watch was made by Richard Medhurst of Croydon c. The watch movement has very wonderful Tulip pillars that are typically found on watches pre-1700, however a few makers continued to utilize them into the 18th century.
There are very few English watches coming to the market with Tulip Pillars. The balance cock has the smaller foot that has a decorative bordered edge that is in alignment with the lower watch plate. The Tompion regulator is small and at the hinge location.Unique to a handful of makers such as Tompion, the balance wheel is ribbed. The date I arrived at was an assessment of all of the characteristics. The winding extension of the fusee at some point in its history was reduced to accept a smaller key.
The bow and stem were replaced due to heavy damage. The inner case has and old reinforcement at the hinge location. The inner and outer case seem to be original to the watch movement.The outer case could be slightly latter than the inner case. The name and location on the original champleve dial have been cleaned to reveal. The champleve dial has an age related patina. The movement was carefully cleaned and no history was removed and the original gilding is intact.
